Mafia

Mafia, no hard feelings

The town falls asleep, the group wakes up. Suspecting each other is allowed; taking offence is not.

A reason

A three-step plan. It works in any city — with or without an activity on the map.

  1. Find a club with open games, or gather a bigger group and a host who knows the rules.

  2. Agree that what’s said in the game stays in the game. In the first round, everyone gives their name and one fact — true or made up.

  3. After the final round, go over the best bluff and the silliest suspicion of the night. Roles go back in the box with the cards.

If you come on your own

Mafia clubs make up tables from everyone who signs up, and the host explains the rules to newcomers. Getting acquainted starts on night one.

First line

So the chat doesn’t stop at “hi”.

To one person

Fancy a game of Mafia? I promise an honest face, even when I’m the mafia. Especially when I’m the mafia.

To a group chat

Getting a Mafia game together: we need peaceful townsfolk, suspicious faces and one person with a good voice to host. Who’s playing?

Format
When

Up to three options make it easier to choose. Times are local to the place you meet.

Option 1

A place or a neighbourhood. A home address doesn’t belong in the link.

Everyone may bring along one person they know.

Meet safely

For this idea

The game is about suspicion, not about people: if someone feels hurt, take a break. Games run late — plan your way home.

Before any meeting

  • Meet somewhere public the first time — and in daylight, if that feels calmer.
  • Plan your own way there and back. There is no need to share your home address.
  • Let someone close know where you will be and who with: send them the plan.

If you go as a group

  • Take turns hosting: over the evening everyone gets to play and to watch the game from the outside, which is fun too.
  • Agree in advance how everyone is getting home — especially if the evening ends late.

Talk

Three questions from the “Honestly?” deck. Any of them can be skipped.

  1. What do you notice first in a new place?

  2. Which of your habits surprises people at first and then makes sense?

  3. Which differences between people make time together more interesting?
