Letters to yourself

Letters to the future

A quiet café, a sheet of paper each and one question: what would you tell yourself a year from now? No need to share.

  • For two
  • A table of 4–6
  • 60–75 min
  • Free
  • Indoors
  • Not for a first meeting

A reason

A three-step plan. It works in any city — with or without an activity on the map.

  1. Bring paper and envelopes or open the notes on your phone. Pick a calm café.

  2. Write for twenty minutes: what to keep, what to change, what to try. Then swap one line on a folded slip of paper.

  3. Set a calendar reminder for the same day next year. Keep each other’s envelopes only if you both want to.

First line

So the chat doesn’t stop at “hi”.

To one person

Here’s an unusual idea: we each write a letter to ourselves a year from now. A quiet café, good tea. No reading aloud.

To a group chat

How about a quiet evening: we write letters to ourselves a year ahead, meet again in a year and each open our own. Tea and envelopes on me.

Invite

Format
When

Up to three options make it easier to choose. Times are local to the place you meet.

Option 1
0 of 60

A place or a neighbourhood. A home address doesn’t belong in the link.

Meet safely

For this idea

A letter can stir up more than you expect. Sharing is optional, and you can change the subject at any moment.

Before any meeting

  • Meet somewhere public the first time — and in daylight, if that feels calmer.
  • Plan your own way there and back. There is no need to share your home address.
  • Let someone close know where you will be and who with: send them the plan.

If you go as a group

  • At a table of four to six, agree up front that nobody reads anyone else’s letter. Keep the envelopes in one box with a chosen keeper.
  • Agree in advance how everyone is getting home — especially if the evening ends late.

Talk

Three questions from the “Honestly?” deck. Any of them can be skipped.

  1. What promise to yourself would you like to keep this year?

  2. What would you like to say more often to the people close to you?

  3. What would you like to try for the first time this autumn or spring?
