Pottery wheel

A cup from one lump of clay

A potter’s wheel, clay up to the elbows and two cups that, once fired, give you a reason to meet again.

A reason

A three-step plan. It works in any city — with or without an activity on the map.

  1. Book a beginners’ trial class and ask when you can collect your pieces after firing.

  2. Make a cup for each other: a gift, not a masterpiece. A wobbly rim is a signature style.

  3. Agree who collects the cups after firing. Or go together, and there is your reason for a second meeting.

First line

So the chat doesn’t stop at “hi”.

To one person

Shall we try the potter’s wheel? We each make a cup. Mine will definitely be wonkier, let’s see by how much.

To a group chat

Pottery wheel for four, anyone? Two hours in clay, and after firing everyone gets a cup of their own.

Invite

An invitation link: they pick a time and answer in a couple of taps.

Format
When

Up to three options make it easier to choose. Times are local to the place you meet.

Option 1
0 of 60

A place or a neighbourhood. A home address doesn’t belong in the link.

Meet safely

For this idea

Clay gets on everything, so mention it in the invitation. Take off rings and bracelets before you start: the wheel spins fast.

Before any meeting

  • Meet somewhere public the first time — and in daylight, if that feels calmer.
  • Plan your own way there and back. There is no need to share your home address.
  • Let someone close know where you will be and who with: send them the plan.

If you go as a group

  • Take neighbouring wheels and make a set for four: four different cups, one shared story.
  • Agree in advance how everyone is getting home — especially if the evening ends late.

Talk

Three questions from the “Honestly?” deck. Any of them can be skipped.

  1. Which ordinary object in your home has a story?

  2. Which activity turned out better than you expected?

  3. How do you like to celebrate small shared wins?
