Birdwatching

Who sings in the park

A quiet walk with a task: hear and recognise five birds. Binoculars optional.

  • A table of 4–6

A reason

A three-step plan. It works in any city — with or without an activity on the map.

  1. Choose a park with water or old trees and go in the morning, when birds are loudest. Install a bird-song ID app.

  2. Walk slowly and take turns spotting voices. The stakes: whoever beats the app to naming a bird chooses where you have tea.

  3. List the birds of the morning and choose a favourite voice. Leave the one that never showed itself for next time.

First line

So the chat doesn’t stop at “hi”.

To one person

Shall we go and listen to birds in the park? Early, quiet and a little like detective work. I’ll bring a flask.

To a group chat

Who’s up for hunting bird songs in the park? A quiet walk, a flask and an ID app. Binoculars are a bonus.

Invite

An invitation link: they pick a time and answer in a couple of taps.

Format
When

Up to three options make it easier to choose. Times are local to the place you meet.

Option 1
0 of 60

A place or a neighbourhood. A home address doesn’t belong in the link.

Meet safely

For this idea

Save the quiet corners of the park for later. For a first meeting, keep to busy paths and daylight.

Before any meeting

  • Meet somewhere public the first time — and in daylight, if that feels calmer.
  • Plan your own way there and back. There is no need to share your home address.
  • Let someone close know where you will be and who with: send them the plan.

If you go as a group

  • Split into pairs and take different paths, then compare lists at an agreed spot half an hour later.
  • Agree in advance how everyone is getting home — especially if the evening ends late.

Talk

Three questions from the “Honestly?” deck. Any of them can be skipped.

  1. What do you notice first in a new place?

  2. What topic do you suddenly have ten fascinating facts about?

  3. What recently made you say a heartfelt “wow”?
