A reason
A three-step plan. It works in any city — with or without an activity on the map.
Find a table in a yard, a park or a hall. Bring your own bats and a few spare balls — they love vanishing into bushes.
Play short games to five points. Before each serve, name your shot: “hopeful topspin” counts.
Finish with a rematch where everyone plays with their other hand, then decide where to get tea.
If you come on your own
At outdoor tables and open halls people usually play winner stays on: just ask who’s next and join the queue.
First line
So the chat doesn’t stop at “hi”.
To one person
Ping-pong? I’ll bring the bats, you bring an honest score. My serve is very confident, just not always on the table yet.
To a group chat
Ping-pong, winner stays on. Whoever gives up the table keeps score for the next game. Bring bats and a tolerance for silly serves. Who’s coming?
Invite
An invitation link: they pick a time and answer in a couple of taps.
The reply comes to you as a message — the site never sees it.
Meet safely
For this idea
Don’t reach across the corner of the table for a ball: it’s easy to bang into. Outdoors, pick a dry table and watch your feet.
Before any meeting
- Meet somewhere public the first time — and in daylight, if that feels calmer.
- Plan your own way there and back. There is no need to share your home address.
- Let someone close know where you will be and who with: send them the plan.
If you go as a group
- As a group, play winner stays on or round the table, where everyone circles it and hits once: more laughs than points.
- Agree in advance how everyone is getting home — especially if the evening ends late.
Talk
Three questions from the “Honestly?” deck. Any of them can be skipped.
Which skill would you get at the press of a magic button?
What funny little thing do people usually come to you for?
Which of your habits surprises people at first and then makes sense?
