Hiking

A half-day hike

Half a day on a forest trail, sandwiches at the rest stop and the kind of talk the city never has time for.

A reason

A three-step plan. It works in any city — with or without an activity on the map.

  1. Choose a known route with a clear way back to public transport. Bring water, snacks, a first-aid kit and a charged phone.

  2. Walk at the pace of the slowest. At the rest stop, lay out a shared picnic: everyone unpacks their snacks, everyone tries.

  3. On the way back, pick a trail for the next hike — or simply agree to meet for tea in town during the week.

If you come on your own

On hikes with open sign-up an organiser leads and the route is shared: a group forms on the way, since everyone walks in one direction.

First line

So the chat doesn’t stop at “hi”.

To one person

A few of us are going on a half-day hike. Want to join? The route is easy, sandwiches are mandatory, and I can lend you a backpack.

To a group chat

Who’s up for a half-day hike this weekend? Easy route, and a shared picnic from whatever we bring. Say if you’re in and I’ll send the meeting point.

Invite

An invitation link: they pick a time and answer in a couple of taps.

Format
When

Up to three options make it easier to choose. Times are local to the place you meet.

Option 1
0 of 60

A place or a neighbourhood. A home address doesn’t belong in the link.

Everyone may bring along one person they know.

Meet safely

For this idea

Tell someone close your route and when you’ll be back. Check the forecast, and in warm months use tick repellent and cover your legs.

Before any meeting

  • Meet somewhere public the first time — and in daylight, if that feels calmer.
  • Plan your own way there and back. There is no need to share your home address.
  • Let someone close know where you will be and who with: send them the plan.

If you go as a group

  • Four to six is a good size: walk in pairs and swap at rest stops. Agree who walks last so the group doesn’t stretch out.
  • Agree in advance how everyone is getting home — especially if the evening ends late.

Talk

Three questions from the “Honestly?” deck. Any of them can be skipped.

  1. Where in your city is it good just to be?

  2. Which journey stayed with you longer than the place it led to?

  3. What gives you the courage to start something new?
